When I arrived at the bar, I was shocked to only see Alice waiting for me. Alice must have seen me walking toward her through the mirror behind the bar because she spiraled around on her stool and watched me, her expression brightening.

“Hi, Alice,” I said, smiling faintly but wishing I had the motivation to be more of a bitch.

She pointed to the empty stool beside her. “I saved you a seat.”

I climbed up on the tall chair and looked at her, waiting for her to explain why she’d asked me to meet her.

“That was some event, wasn’t it?” she asked, grinning.

I grunted, raising my eyebrows. Then the bartender, grinning from ear to ear, asked if I wanted to order a drink. I wouldn’t have noticed his expression if I hadn’t felt annoyed that it was the direct opposite of what I felt. Regardless, I ordered club soda with lime.

“No cocktail?” Alice asked.

“I have a long night ahead of me.”

She just smiled. “I see… you didn’t return to the event.” Her tone was leading me to explain.

“And my job, Alice. I’m no longer affiliated with Jimmy’s campaign.”

“Your mother doesn’t seem to believe that.”

“Well, my mother is free to believe whatever she likes.”

The bartender set my drink in front of me. I thanked him, and he winked at me. His apparent flirtation made me lean back a hair. I never used to notice such behavior from the opposite sex.

Alice leaned toward me. “He knows a true beauty when he sees one.”

I smiled tightly, feeling way too antsy to discuss the guy behind the bar. “I’m sorry, but why am I here, Alice?”

She took a sip of her martini with an olive while regarding me shrewdly. “Do you know Spencer Blackstone?”

I felt my frown intensify. “Yes.”

“Intimately,” she added.

I cocked my head. “Are you asking or making a statement?”

“The latter. He played very well in the media recently, exposing what Randolph did to those poor girls.”

“Then you knew Spencer’s father?” I asked because her tone indicated a familiarity with the subject.

“Randolph? Yes. You couldn’t be associated with politics and not know Randolph Blackstone. He had magnificent aspirations for his son Jasper. But after Randolph died, he chose to go in a different direction. Spencer Blackstone, however…” She flexed her eyebrows twice. “His interview with Hannibal Newton is everywhere.”

I looked off. For some reason, I felt a pinch of jealousy. I wanted Spencer to go undiscovered until I was sure his heart belonged to me and mine to him.

“I take it you didn’t know the clip had become so popular.”

I caught a glance of my grimace in the mirror and evened it out. “No, I didn’t.”

“Were you his media advisor?”

“No,” I said with an edge. “His reaction was not a performance coached by me or anyone else. That’s not Spencer’s style.”

She grunted thoughtfully. “Then that’s good.”

I took a sip of my drink, waiting for her to say more. We were almost done as far as I was concerned.

“Has he ever considered running for office?”

“Ha!” I said loudly.
